‘Iphigenia in Aulis: self-delusion and self-denial, 2020, 100 x 120 cm, oil on linen
Inspired by Iphigeneia in Aulis, the painting portrays Iphigeneia facing a prophecy that demands her death. Confronted with her family’s consent, she retreats into self-deception, reframing her fate as heroic martyrdom in the spirit of Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People. The work explores cognitive dissonance, highlighting the tension between reality and the mind’s need to protect itself from pain.
