Protective or restrictive?'
oil on canvas, 50 cm x 70 cm.
This painting can only be explained as a multiversional narrative: is the blindfolded girl playing blind man's bluff with a playmate, whose presence the viewer is only made aware of by a shadow in the foreground? Or does this shadow belong to somebody sneaking up on the girl? Are the two men in the painting protecting the second child? Or are they equally ill-intentioned? Or is she perhaps just too shy to ask the other children if she can participate in their game? The painting defies simple narrative resolution. There is a sense of lurking unease: a mystery for the unraveling. The viewer is encouraged to have his own imaginative response to the work.
